Shree Disable School was the most recent recipient of Second Base support. This disability school was established in 1995 (2050 B.S) in Patihani Village Development Committee. This School is the only one of its kind for many miles and was initially established in a small hut. With NGO support a slightly more developed structure was established but when the NGO left the facility was incomplete and became difficult for the locals to sustain with electricity not installed and the structure open to the elements and prone to flooding. The students stopped coming and dropped in numbers from 30 to 5 as families chose to keep their children home with them or take them to work in the fields.
When Second Base proposed to come to the area the school requested support to complete the building. The tasks included plastering, painting, electrical fitting and ground filling. To ensure this project achieved full potential a management committee was established which included members of the local school, members of FACE Nepal (an NGO), and disabled family members. To enable the community to retain ownership of the project it was decided that all committee members would have a contribution to the project, this included project management provided by the local school, tools and labour contributed by the community, and supplies, participant labour, hired skilled labour and all costs covered by Second Base. “It was common to see villagers stop by to offer help to the project and the disabled students flocked around to watch and try and help with bringing water, taking photos just hang out with the group” commented a Second Base participant.
The project was successfully completed in four days. One month after the Second Base group left the village the number of participants was at 12 children with more arriving and the disabled school had started planning to continue the momentum of development with the creation of a disabled playground. “The school and the community people are happy and have heartily appreciated to the support”, a member of the local management committee says "the program has inspired for better management and good teaching". In the same way the Chairman of the School, Mr.Kamalraj Pandey said “it has given me an energy to work for the future and continue this teaching”.
